Rogers was shot by an officer as he attempted to drive away from a parking lot. The officer who killed Rogers, James Burns, was fired by the department nearly three weeks after the shooting following an internal investigation that found he used ‘unnecessary and unreasonable force’. Authorities initially said the incident started when an officer suspected someone of trying to break into a car, but police now say there was no evidence that Rogers was a suspect or even that there were any break-ins. The local prosecutor said he would seek an indictment against Burns for felony murder and other crimes.
